HKS Inc., Dallas, has been selected to design a new stadium for the Washington Commanders National Football League team in Washington, DC

The 65,000-seat indoor stadium is part of a $3.7 billion public-private partnership between the team’s owners and the city to redevelop a 180-acre campus adjacent to the Anacostia River. In addition to hosting more than 200 games, concerts and other planned events each year, the stadium will be the centerpiece of a multifaceted development program that will include the construction of more than 5,000 new and retained recreational facilities and potential hotel and commercial development space. Almost a third of the campus will be dedicated to enhanced green spaces.

Over the coming months, HKS and the commanders will develop the stadium concept and schematic design, followed by a series of community engagement meetings. A statement from HKS says sustainability, advanced technology, an enhanced fan experience and amplified sponsorship integration will be at the forefront of the stadium’s design as it evolves.

Vertical construction of the stadium is expected to begin in the spring of 2027, with full completion expected by 2030. No contractor has been named, although media reports cite Bethesda, Maryland-based Clark Construction as performing pre-construction work.

The city gained administrative control of the campus from the National Park Service after a December 2024 act of Congress, removing longstanding restrictions that had hampered previous redevelopment efforts. RFK Stadium, which previously occupied the site, is in the final stages of demolition.
