Merit Award

Presented by Tone of the structure

Owner: The LEGO Group

Main design company: BDG

General contractor: Tone of the structure

Structural Engineer: McNamara/Salvia Inc.

MEP Engineer: Syska Hennessy

Owner’s representative: Redgate Real Estate Advisors

Subcontractors: EM Duggan; East Coast Fireproofing Co.; EK Construction; Hawthorne Steel Erectors; J&M Brown Co.; S&F concrete; Sullivan & McLaughlin Cos.; Synergies

Inspired by the owner’s iconic brickwork, the curves of the tube and stud design are reflected throughout the 157,000 square meter office space, resulting in many circular elements, from more than 40 round conference rooms to circular pantries on each floor. Other features include sky terraces, more than 660 workstations, a gym, parents’ rooms and flexible wellness areas.

The construction of four central staircases on five floors dictated the overall schedule of the project. Along with planning for the safety implications of a large hole in space, the team also considered the usability of each floor during construction and the logistics of maneuvering steel and other materials. Completing each staircase was a major milestone, allowing the team access to complete other areas of the floors.

The installation of physical LEGO models, including one depicting a rotating DNA double helix, required extensive coordination and good teamwork for the extremely precise operation, including having a fire brigade on hand as a safeguard.
