Muharraq Ring Road (Busaiteen Link)

Busait, Bahrain

Merit Award, Road/Highway

Presented by Ministry of Development, Bahrain and AECOM

Owner: Works Department, Directorate of Road Projects and Maintenance

Leading design company | Project Manager | Civil, structural and MEP engineer: AECOM Middle East

Contractor: Nass and Nassir Hazza Al Subaie to hire

Subcontractors: NASS Electrical Contracting Co.; Nass Asphalt; Joseph Gallagher Middle East; Al Ahlia Contracting Co.; Bahrain Pipes BSC; VSL Middle East; Delmon Ready Mixed Concrete & Products Co.; Associates Ismail Khoonji; Bilfinger Tebodin Middle East; Infra Shore Mechanical Co.

This project adds 8.5 km of dual-lane highway and 2.4 km of related roads to connect one of Bahrain’s busiest traffic corridors. The team used early planning, 24-hour operations and precise sequencing to deliver the project in just seven months, eight months ahead of schedule.

Extensive additional scope was added two months into the project, including the installation of additional sewer lines and the widening of a connecting road. The team coordinated more than 50 subcontractors and 1,500 workers at the peak of the project.

To avoid traffic disruptions, the team chose a trenchless method, using microtunnels to install utilities under active traffic areas. Utilities were integrated in phases, allowing for simultaneous progress and avoiding utility conflicts.

Safety was a priority, especially navigating the extreme heat of the Bahraini summer. The team logged more than 2.5 million hours of work without a lost time incident.
