A joint venture between Stantec and AECOM has been selected by the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command for a five-year, $150 million contract supporting the US Navy’s shipyard infrastructure optimization program.

The companies will provide multidisciplinary services to advance the modernization of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, part of the Navy’s long-term effort to modernize its public shipyard system and improve fleet readiness.

In addition to the Portsmouth facility, the recapitalization program covers three other public US naval shipyards: Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Hawaii, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Washington, and Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia.

Originally built in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the facilities required improved infrastructure and industrial plant equipment, as well as reconfigured shipyard designs and expanded capacity for current and future maintenance demands.

The investments would increase maintenance performance, improve working conditions and improve operational efficiency for approximately 37,000 workers employed in the public shipyard system, according to the Navy.

Stantec has supported the Navy’s program planning and delivery efforts at all four shipyards. The company is currently under contract, through a separate joint venture, to support activities at Pearl Harbor and Puget Sound and provides broader services to the US Department of Defense, including the Navy, as well as the US Air Force and the US Air Force. army

Chris Williams, senior vice president of U.S. federal programs at Stantec, said in a statement that his “technical expertise” will “help modernize the Navy’s shipyard infrastructure in support of fleet readiness.”

AECOM, which said it has supported the Navy’s infrastructure programs for decades, recently completed the site development plan for the Pearl Harbor Shipyard and Maintenance Facility as part of the Navy’s modernization program.
