The City of Alexandria, Virginia has reached a milestone in its efforts to electrify its DASH bus fleet with the installation of an in-route pantograph charger and associated infrastructure.

The system allows DASH buses to be charged while in service, thereby expanding route flexibility, extending operating range and reducing downtime. The project, led by energy infrastructure provider ABM, also included the installation of electrical cabinets, electrical infrastructure and civil foundation works.

Alexandria’s efforts to transition its DASH fleet to 100% zero-emission vehicles have been underway since 2019. With funding from a variety of sources, including a $24 million federal grant awarded in 2023, DASH has deployed 16 battery electric buses, with another 20 vehicles funded and currently in procurement.

Serving more than 5.3 million riders annually, DASH has also rolled out facility upgrades to support increased electric capacity.
