The A47 job will be re-tendered after Galliford Try pulls out

Galliford Try is to be replaced as main construction contractor on a £100m upgrade near Norwich after National Highways confirmed it would re-tender the project.

The A47/A11 Thickthorn junction review is one of a suite of road improvement schemes worth almost £500m to improve safety and reduce congestion on the A47.

National Highways said the reason for the decision was commercially sensitive and would remain between the two parties.

The company will abandon the project once the pre-construction works are completed, when a new contractor will take over.

However, he added that he had a responsibility to ensure his projects represented good value for money, which meant he sometimes had to make changes to the way work was delivered.

The High Court recently upheld the Secretary of State for Transport’s decision to grant development consent orders for the Thickthorn Junction upgrade and two other A47 schemes.

These projects, both yet to be delivered by Galliford Try, are new dual carriageways and links between Blofield and North Burlingham, and between North Tuddenham and Easton.

The High Court ruling followed a legal challenge on environmental grounds which prevented preparatory work for the Thickthorn scheme from taking place last year.

However, National Highways said work on the project will still start as planned next year.

A spokesman said: “Galliford Try will continue to work with National Highways on the redevelopment of the A47/A11 Thickthorn junction, near Norwich, delivering a pre-construction works package for the project.

“At this point the contract with Galliford Try will come to an organized and managed end with a new contractor taking over the construction element.”

The spokesman added: “Although the construction contractor will be new, the plans to redevelop the junction remain the same, and major works on the project are expected to start, as planned, next spring.”

Thickthorn’s new design includes a single lane link road connecting the A11 northbound with the A47 eastbound via two underpasses under the A11 and A47.

Around 3,000 new homes could be planned near the junction, along with commercial units.

Galliford Try has been approached for comment.
