At 1.1 million square feet, the new home of the Los Angeles Clippers builds on decades of stadium construction, giving Inglewood, California a sustainable, durable and technologically advanced venue.

A limited site and close airspace required a carefully choreographed construction effort. The stadium’s 2,784-ton roof is supported by seven 120-ton primary trusses, the steel of which was erected from inside the bowl by cranes on lattice tracks rather than tower cranes.

On the outside, a 2,791-ton structural steel frame clad in PTFE and ETFE panels gives the Intuit Dome its iconic look, which was inspired by a basketball net.

“On the construction side, the technology really differentiates this building and that [is] the most sophisticated of any arena in the NBA,” says Craig Bojda, vice president of AECOM Hunt. “From frictionless commerce in markets and bars, to technology in every spectator seat, the Clippers have made very conscious decisions to give their fans the best NBA experience.”

This includes a 360˚ sound system, as well as an industry-first video screen, the Halo, a 27-foot-high continuous surround 4K LED screen fixed to the main trusses.

From its datagrid steel frame to its 40,000 square meter video screen, the Intuit Dome sets a new standard for stadium construction.

“The construction team worked with technology partners early in the preconstruction process to include space, power and track requirements for technology advancements early in project design and construction sequencing,” says Rames Sundaram, project executive at AECOM Hunt. “We packaged all the technology systems for the phased acquisition, planning for the incorporation of the latest technologies while meeting schedule targets.”

In addition to its high-tech features, the Intuit Dome is the first NBA stadium to achieve LEED Platinum certification. The all-electric facility features 2 MW of rooftop solar panels and 11 MW of battery storage.
