Dive brief:

  • Micron selected Bechtel as its engineering, procurement and construction partner for the first phase of its $100 billion semiconductor manufacturing complex in Clay, New York, according to a news release Wednesday.
  • Bechtel, a general contractor based in Reston, Virginia, will immediately mobilize to the White Pine Commerce Park site in Onondaga County, where Micron first broke ground in January at what will eventually become the nation’s largest semiconductor manufacturing facility, according to the release.
  • The announcement marks the next phase of construction activity on a project that has been steadily progressing multiple timeline adjustments during the last year.

Diving knowledge:

Providence, Rhode Island-based builder Gilbane won a preconstruction contract in August 2025 to prepare the ground for the site. This award marked the first phase of development at White Pine Commerce Park.

In November, Micron delayed the planned opening of the complex’s first facility by two years to 2030, with milestones for subsequent facilities to 2041. At the same time, site preparation work continued, and the company officially broke ground earlier this year.

The partnership with Bechtel now moves Micron’s New York megafab closer to taking physical form, said Manish Bhatia, Micron’s executive vice president of global operations.

“We are entering an exciting new phase of construction,” Bhatia said in the statement. “Our New York project will be home to the world’s most advanced memory manufacturing and will serve as a cornerstone of America’s leadership in the age of AI.”

According to the release, Bechtel plans to deploy modular strategies and digital construction technologies to the project. The contractor said this integrated EPC delivery model will keep the project on schedule and streamline workforce coordination.

“This project represents more than the construction of a semiconductor campus, it is part of the foundation of America’s industrial future,” said Craig Albert, president and chief operating officer of Bechtel. “Micron is making a generational investment in American manufacturing, and Bechtel is delivering on its world-class execution.”
