Among the variety of heavy machines that make today’s projects possible, a backhoe is particularly versatile. This machine features a rear-mounted digging bucket and a front-loading bucket for pushing and picking up material, and is usually built on one of a variety of tractor chassis.
While many other machines only allow one operator to perform one function, the fact that a backhoe does double duty makes it essential on many projects. In terms of applications, backhoes do foundation work, pipe trenches and prepare a construction site by loading debris onto trucks.
However, there are some distinct disadvantages to using a backhoe, as it can be more complex to operate. And without a hydraulic system, which allows a backhoe to lift thousands of pounds, it’s not very useful. As for the backhoe assembly itself, it consists of a boom, a box arm and a bucket. These are connected with joints, which allow the large mechanical arm to raise, lower, rotate and grip various degrees. But moving them requires large cylinders and rods, which are affected by the pumping of hydraulic fluid.

How exactly does a backhoe hydraulic system work?

The term “hydraulics” is meant to describe the act of moving something liquid and is not isolated to heavy machinery systems. Historically, this liquid was water, which is why the modern word comes from the Greek terms “hydor” and “aulos”, which translate to “water pipe”. In the case of a backhoe, instead of water, a specially formulated oil is used that is very different from engine oil. The hydraulic systems of these machines can be complex, but the basic principle of how they work is much easier to understand.
In a video on the basics of how hydraulics work, YouTube channel Diesel and Iron provided a simple demonstration using two plastic syringes (for measuring liquids) connected by a short plastic hose. One syringe is full of liquid and the other is empty. When the plunger of the full syringe is pressed down, liquid is drawn into the empty syringe, pushing its plunger outward. This is similar to what happens when hydraulic fluid is pumped from a reservoir into a hydraulic cylinder by pushing a rod. These hydraulic cylinders and rods can be seen on the backhoe arm and are what move the boom, rocker arm and bucket.
How to tell if a backhoe’s hydraulic system is bad

When a backhoe’s hydraulic system is not working optimally, there are some obvious signs, such as the inability to move the arm or bucket. You may also notice hydraulic fluid on the floor under the machine, which means a leak has sprung up somewhere, potentially around the hoses. Hydraulic fluid must remain at optimal levels to maintain the proper pressure required to move the components of a backhoe. A leak could cause the machine to move at a slower rate, requiring more time to complete tasks.

Another worrying sign that something might be wrong with a backhoe’s hydraulic system is strange noises. The hydraulic systems of the machines are generally not too loud and emit a consistent sound signature when everything is working normally. Unusual knocks or high-pitched sounds when moving the backhoe arm indicate a potential problem.
Regular maintenance is key to keeping a backhoe running at its best and can help you catch problems before they get worse. The hydraulic oil itself should be changed routinely, along with the filters, as it can become full of contaminants that cause added wear and tear on the entire system. Although, if you don’t want the burden of maintaining your own machine, you can also rent a backhoe for the day, with costs depending on the size of the machine, the company you rent from, and your location.
