The 76,000-square-foot expansion and renovation effort doubled the emergency department space, keeping operations uninterrupted during the four-year construction phase. The project added an ambulance drop-off and triage building on the ground and a two-story extension on the west side. As part of a comprehensive renovation of the existing emergency space, the redesigned layout consolidates seven specialist emergency areas under one roof, improving care coordination and workflow. Technology and infrastructure improvements were integrated throughout the project, extending beyond equipment to support care delivery. Updated mechanical systems improved airflow to critical areas and enhanced imaging capabilities.
Originally planned to unfold in five phases, the work evolved into a more complex sequence of enabling phases, subphases and microphases, each closely aligned with hospital operations. The team coordinated the new construction alongside ongoing clinical operations, including maintaining emergency access and critical systems without disruption. Construction often occurred within inches of active treatment areas.
