Transporting a heavy load presents a variety of hazards and potential hazards. North American Heavy Haul pioneered many of the safety precautions that have become industry standards and have been incorporated into industry guidelines. It’s important for customers to know that their equipment or machinery will be well taken care of throughout its journey, whether it’s within the state or across international borders. The main objective of any heavy transport project is the safety of the load and mitigating any potential risk to other drivers.

Heavy duty specifications

In Florida, a heavy haul load is one that exceeds 13 feet 6 inches in height, 80,000 pounds, 75 feet in length and 8 feet 6 inches in width. A special permit will be required and specialized trailers will be used.

center of gravity

It is essential that loads are placed on a trailer in an optimal position with respect to the center of gravity. The weight must be distributed evenly. This presents a lower profile and significantly reduces the possibility of tipping over while navigating freeway corners and on-ramps. Specialized trailers are available that make it easier to lower the center of gravity.

Clean and clear

Bumps and bumps in the roads can cause any dirt or debris to be kicked up from equipment or machinery. All types of cargo must be cleaned before loading to remove dirt and other types of debris that may be displaced during transit. If not removed, they can fall from the load and create a hazard for other drivers.

Secure the load

Properly securing the load is a critical practice. Specific guidelines govern the type of tether that should be used and where it should be placed for optimal security. Chocks may also be necessary to prevent equipment or machinery from moving during acceleration or in the event of a sudden stop. Chains are the preferred method. Straps can be used in some situations, but the size and strength of the laces are carefully calculated.

moving parts

The trucking company will unload all attachments and moving parts before starting the haul. In many cases, accessories can be removed and transported with the equipment to minimize height or length. Attachments that have been removed are fixed separately. The doors or steering wheels of the equipment must be secured so that they do not move.
