BIM + PIM: combination of 2 strategies to improve construction management

Ask architects, engineers, CGs, and owners about one of the most annoying elements of construction management, and they’ll likely mention the painstaking process of digging through disparate project data. The crux of the challenge: Stakeholders contribute their own processes, tools and workflows. When information is distributed among multiple sources, such as emails, texts, meeting notes, and applications, project management can become chaotic.

However, the expertise of all stakeholders is vital to the fruition of any large-scale construction effort. Effective communication and collaboration between all parties is non-negotiable.

For project managers, creating a collaborative environment between multiple stakeholders can be daunting; imposing a top-down approach often falls short.

Joining the forces of PIM + BIM is the best modern approach: combining the accuracy of building information modeling (BIM), including problem tracking and 2D/3D model visualization with the comprehensive data integration of the project information management (PIM), including contract administration (RFIs and submissions), action item tracking, file management and email management enable a comprehensive approach to project delivery large-scale construction projects. Finding a single tool that perfectly merges these approaches has not been possible until now.

The industry need is clear: a cloud-based digital platform that integrates project management, document oversight and BIM coordination. This platform would centralize action items, emails, 2D/3D models and contract management elements, while synchronizing with existing software tools. This would produce a holistic project record accessible anytime, anywhere, categorized and easily searchable. The reward? Increased efficiency, reduced errors and reduced project costs.

Streamlined information workflow, smooth construction management

Herein lies the power of merging PIM and BIM: all aspects – people, processes and technology – are intertwined, clarifying the exchange of information. The goal is a unified communication flow that spans conversations, files, and actions, creating a complete project history from start to finish. The ideal platform integrates without overriding existing tools, whether it’s email platforms like Outlook, design software like Revit, or crash detection tools like Navisworks, to name a few. A single digital interface would streamline day-to-day operations, from submitting submissions and RFIs directly from emails, to displaying model-based action items, to saving time by aggregating data searches of any project, regardless of where they are located, and will provide clarity on the plans or on the construction site.

While both PIM and BIM individually address certain project lifecycle challenges, their integration revolutionizes stakeholder collaboration, an ideal that was previously elusive. Today’s industry is at a crucial juncture. Collaborative, accessible and contextual access to data leads this evolution, which translates into time and cost savings.

With rapid technological advances, having elite tools and processes, such as PIM + BIM synergy, is paramount to the success of a project from conception to delivery.
