What to Expect When Hosting a Farm Party | Agricultural and rural family life

In an age where everyone feels very busy and most of our connections seem to be happening digitally, there’s something really special about hosting farm parties that bring people together in the heart of the countryside .

Lately I’ve had the privilege of hosting several parties at the farm, each with its own unique theme and charm. From a construction-themed birthday party for my 2-year-old to a Peter Rabbit-themed baby shower for a dear friend, these gatherings have been both a labor of love and a celebration of rich resources provided by our local farms.

In this column, I want to share the joys and benefits of hosting farm parties, which not only create unforgettable memories, but also promote a deeper connection with nature and our local community.

I think one of the benefits of hosting a farm party is the authenticity it brings to the event. Farms are genuine, down-to-earth places where life develops in harmony with nature.

When you choose a farm as your party venue, you’re setting the stage for a truly unique experience. Whether it’s the rustic barns, the sprawling fields or the hum of farm machinery in the background, the farm atmosphere adds a touch of authenticity that can’t be replicated at a traditional party venue.

For my son’s construction themed birthday party at our farm, we used real construction equipment that we had, such as a backhoe and a trencher. The kids didn’t just play with toy trucks, they got hands-on experience with the real deal, and their excitement was palpable.

All the kids donned construction vests and hard hats and had a Polaroid photo taken to take home. It was a fun experience that left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance

Even though it wasn’t “themed” I also brought my horse out to the party and had him give the kids “pony rides” which is always popular no matter what the party theme is.

The Peter Rabbit garden themed baby shower I hosted with a friend at Blue Elk Vineyard in Northeastern Maryland. The farm’s magnificent renovated barn overlooking the fields, vineyards and river behind the farm provided the perfect setting.

In keeping with the garden theme, the shower was also decorated with locally grown flowers, plants and vegetables. Adding beautiful corners of carrots, beets, and kale made for beautiful table decorations that were simple, themed, and easy.

One of the most rewarding aspects of hosting farm festivals is the opportunity to support local agriculture and the community. By using locally sourced products and decorations, you not only add a personal touch to your event, but also contribute to the livelihood of farmers and artisans in your area.

For example, at the baby shower we created a seasonal cocktail by making an all-local mimosa bar with a semi-sparkling white wine from our winery and a fresh-pressed apple cider from Milburn Orchards in Elkton, Maryland. It was a success! Fresh, crisp and delicious, I make this my personal seasonal cocktail until the local apple cider runs out.

Baby shower guests really enjoyed the connection that local products made to the event. I think the sense of community commitment and support is something that resonates deeply with both hosts and guests.

I know I’m a little biased, but I think farm parties have an inherent charm that makes them unforgettable.

In today’s fast-paced world, farm parties offer a refreshing and enriching place for celebrations. They provide authenticity, connection to nature and a sense of community while supporting local agriculture. They foster lasting memories, bring generations together and offer unique photo opportunities against the backdrop of the serene landscape.
