Washington County – First responders were dispatched this morning to an accident involving an 18-wheeler and a backhoe.
It happened on Thursday, November 16 at 10:09 a.m. on Railroad Bed Road in Washington County.
Authorities say Michael Kelly of Kill Devil Hills was the driver of the commercial vehicle and Damion House of Washington was the operator of the backhoe.
Both operators were traveling northbound below the posted speed limit of 55 mph.
As Kelly attempted to pass the backhoe in a passing zone, House began to maneuver into the other lane for unknown reasons leading to a collision.
Tyrrell County EMS medical personnel transported both drivers for medical treatment with non-life threatening injuries.
Police have reported that the road was temporarily closed to traffic for 3 hours after the incident.
This incident remains under investigation and officials say charges are pending.
