McCarthy, based in St. Louis, began building one $285 million student housing development at Riverside University in California, the contractor announced Dec. 7.

The 424,000-square-foot North District Phase 2 student housing development is a form of intersegmental student housing, allowing enrolled Riverside Community College District students to stay on UCR’s main campus , according to the statement. The facility aims to give community college enrollees the experience of living at a four-year university.

The development contains 429 modern apartment-style units for single and double occupancy, ranging from one to four bedrooms, according to the release. The facility will also feature kitchen and living room spaces, along with contemporary amenities such as high-speed Wi-Fi, air conditioning, designated study areas and community areas designed for both academic focus and for social participation.

The project received funding through the California Higher Education Student Housing Grant Program to provide additional beds for low-income UCR and RCCD students. With the funding and efforts, the dormitory has 1,568 total beds.

Similar projects are in the planning stages or underway in California. The University of California, Merced and Merced College announced Sept. 1 that they would jointly build one 488-bed student housing project for community college and transfer students.

In addition, an intersegmental housing project between San Diego State University, SDSU Imperial Valley and Imperial Valley College received $11.6 million in funding of the Nov. 8 state assembly, the Imperial Valley Press reported.

The first students are expected to move into the North District Phase 2 student housing development in 2025.
