A McCarthy joint venture based in St. Louis and Texas builder Vaughn Construction will build a $5 billion replacement pediatric campus in Dallas for Children’s Health, McCarthy announced Feb. 8. The McCarthy Vaughn Partnership is billing the facility, which will replace the existing Children’s Health hospital, as one of the largest pediatric hospital campuses in the country.
The project will include 552 beds, a 38 percent increase in the existing facility’s inpatient capacity, across 4.5 million square feet of construction, according to the release. It will also gain 15% more space in the emergency department and a 22% expansion of the operating theatre, plus the area for future growth. The new complex is intended to strengthen medical services for the growing population of North Texas.
In addition, the new location will include a Level I pediatric trauma center with 90 emergency exam rooms and 24 observation rooms, according to the release, along with a new fetal care center.
“The new pediatric campus will be a critical hub to support the ever-growing pediatric health care needs in Dallas today and into the future,” MVP Project Executive Michael Malone said in the statement. “We are thrilled to be able to bring our extensive experience in healthcare construction to help build the spaces that will make a difference in so many young lives.”
This is another mega project in McCarthy’s recent portfolio that the builder has taken on through a JV. In August, they were selected along with Minneapolis-based Mortenson build a $1.5 billion Las Vegas ballparkand in June, the two completed a Billion dollar biosafety lab in Manhattan, Kansas.
Children’s Health expects construction on the new campus to begin in the second half of 2024, according to the release. Officials believe the hospital will open within the next six to seven years.
