The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the NC Turnpike Authority are in the planning stages of replacing the Mid-Currituck Toll Bridge, a new seven-mile span bridge over Currituck Sound and across Maple Swamp to connect mainland Currituck County to US 158 near Aydlett and NC 12 in the Outer Banks. Plans are in the early design stage of the design-build project, with a bid scheduled for June 16, 2026, and an estimated project cost of nearly $397 million. Plans include improvements to prevent and minimize hurricane impacts, as well as to improve safety, such as a medium acceleration lane, light bulbs for U-turn vehicles, a realignment of existing side streets and more. NC Highway 12 will be widened in three locations as part of the project, including the bridge terminus, the commercial area surrounding Albacore Street and Currituck Clubhouse Drive. Roundabouts will also be built on the freeway and signalized pedestrian crossings will be added. NC DOT Division 1 Office, 113 Airport Drive, Ste. 100, Edenton, 27932. DR#94-00595528.
