Sundt Construction recently completed the $10 million G. Michael Hoover KAPBCS Design and Build Training Center in Phoenix. The complex is home to the Center for Craft Excellence (C4CE), Sundt’s national NCCER-certified program, which will offer classes and hands-on training in a variety of trades and host industry and community events.

Designed by Architekton, construction of the ground installation was carried out by Sundt crews. The contractor’s apprentices also contributed, with students in the welding classes building the welding booths that their future colleagues will use for hands-on learning.

Sundt worked with the design team to develop “a clean yet bold aesthetic with enhanced metal cladding, high-quality glass and a touch of Sundt Red with glazed tiles,” according to a Sundt statement. The training center features indoor and outdoor indoor lab spaces along with two hybrid classrooms for face-to-face and virtual events, a 200-seat auditorium with advanced AV/teleconferencing capability, two LED video walls, a kitchen catering and a pre-function space for conferences. and events The outdoor space consists of a 7,500 square meter pre-engineered canopy with HLVS fans and power for tools and equipment used for hands-on vocational training.

“Sundt’s leadership recognized this imminent need for skilled craftsmanship. But we knew we couldn’t just wait for skilled builders, we had to help create them and give our people those opportunities to grow their careers.” , says Sean Ray, Sundt’s vice president of craft workforce development. “Our learnings really benefit all parties, including project owners.”
