COTABATO CITY, Philippines – A construction worker died on the spot after he fell from a backhoe and overturned on one of its big wheels in Barangay Macaguiling in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte Friday afternoon.
Lieutenant Colonel Esmael Madin, head of the Sultan Kudarat Municipal Police Station, told reporters on Saturday morning that the victim, Bernie Calile, 30, and backhoe operator Nicael Gontenas, 38, of the construction company Vicente Lao on the way to a project site when they saw the accident.
The construction company that employed them both had promised to provide Calile’s family with the financial support needed for their burial and to compensate them for their death during working hours.
Madin said they have temporarily seized the company’s heavy equipment for documentation purposes.
