An employee of the Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport (DIPT) was injured on Friday in an incident with a backhoe in Castries.

Permanent Secretary Lenita Joseph confirmed that the DIPT had received reports about the incident at a workplace in the Morne.

“This job site was part of the pre-hurricane and clearing work currently being conducted by the department,” revealed Joseph.

According to preliminary information, he said the boom of a backhoe that was clearing overhanging branches slipped and came into contact with one of the workers.

The PS explained that although the worker was wearing a safety helmet, the impact caused a laceration to his head, and he was receiving medical attention.

Joseph stated that the Department of Infrastructure takes the health and safety of its workers very seriously and remains committed to complying with health and safety procedures at all of its offices and workplaces to minimize the risk of workplace injuries.

“We take this opportunity to encourage all other entities engaged in construction or similar work to comply with all safety policies and procedures at their respective workplaces,” he said.
