The head of Balfour Beatty’s UK construction services is to retire at the end of the year. Construction news has learned
An email sent to staff by the firm’s chief executive, Leo Quinn, announced that Mark Bullock will step down at the end of the year after more than three years in the role.
Bullock joined Balfour Beatty in 2012 as managing director of rail, taking on additional responsibility for public services in 2018.
In 2020 he became chief executive of Balfour Beatty’s UK construction services business, replacing Dean Banks.
In his email to staff, Quinn said: “Mark’s leadership has seen the application of strong governance and controls across the UK construction services portfolio, creating a strong platform for this business of billion pounds at a crucial time for the UK construction industry on its journey to a sustainable and profitable future.
“I would like to thank Mark for his leadership and significant contribution to Balfour Beatty and wish him all the best for his well-deserved retirement.”
Quinn paid tribute to Bullock’s “unwavering focus on health, safety and wellbeing”, which he said had seen the rate of lost time due to injury reduced by 70% since 2020.
He added that Bullock’s leadership of the company’s “Right First Time” quality improvement initiative had resulted in more than 50,000 quality observations across the business.
“A culture where our colleagues make an active decision to make a difference through observations is a culture we can all be proud of,” Quinn said.
CN understands that Balfour Beatty has begun the search for a replacement for Bullock but has not completed the process.
In October, Balfour maintained its place at the top of the CN100, with annual turnover in its latest set of results totaling more than £7.6bn.
