Bethesda, Maryland-based Clark Construction Group has won a contract from Monumental Sports & Entertainment Upgrade Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, according to a press release Monday.
The announcement came a week after the arena’s owners announced a public-private partnership with Washington, DCMayor Muriel Bowser. MSE and Bowser first signed a tentative agreement in March, and the D.C. Council voted in April to invest $515 million over the next three years to support the project, which will cost a total of $800 million . Clark’s contract price was not disclosed.
The deal includes selling the arena to D.C. for $87.5 million, with the city then leasing it until 2050. according to the proposed legislation.

Clark served as the general contractor on Capital One Arena when it was originally built. The place was opened in 1997.

Construction will include an expanded main entrance on F Street, wider lobbies, more elevators, a 65% increase in concession space and a 30% increase in restrooms.
Athlete spaces will grow by more than 60%, including new training rooms, a players’ lounge, a dining room and a family room. The Capitals will get a new movie theater in their locker room, and the Wizards will get a redesigned on-site practice facility, which isn’t currently possible due to available space.
Crews will also add more than 200,000 square feet to the event level to give hospitality staff a larger workspace.
The project will be designed by San Francisco-based Gensler, which also designed the upcoming renovations M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimoreabout 40 miles from Capital One Arena.
