Virginia Passenger’s railway authority has granted a $ 414 million design creation contract to a joint company in Flatirondragados and Herzog for Franconia-Springfield Rail, a separate project designed to improve reliability for both a passenger and goods railway through one of the most busy runners in Virginia.
According to a launch of Flatirondragados, on June 22, announcing the victory, the project will carry out 1.4 kilometers of passenger track and includes a 0.6 mile flight bridge that will initially carry a single track, but is designed to support a future main line.
According to the Agency’s Fact Sheet of February 2025, the design for bypass is approximately 90% complete. The construction is expected to begin this month and end in 2029.
Jim Schneiderman, executive vice president of Flatirondragados, said in a statement that the project “would provide a safer and more efficient rail service by reducing congestion and improving reliability.” He said that the team “will continue to collaborate to … identify innovative solutions to the challenges”.
Agency’s technical documents show that Flyover’s design uses concrete columns pillars supporting transverse steel soil beams with covers composed of the place on the main line of CSX goods. Approach supply are designed with longitudinal steel plate beams and steel roofs. This hybrid configuration was selected on deeper longitudinal beam systems to reduce the vertical profile of the structure, maintain purification on goods operations and simplify construction sequencing in a living railway corridor, according to the request for information from the construction industry of the January agency of 2023.
Plans show that bypass alignment will require approximately 400,000 kilometers of land work, embankments and retaining walls to minimize impacts on the nearby neighborhoods. Temporary tracks will be installed to maintain the trains of goods and passengers passing through the hallway during the creation of several years. Disorder systems, underground detention facilities and Jack-And-Bane crops are expected to manage the conditions of the challenging surface, as described in the November 2024 Rotlle maps of the authority.
Multiple sources of funding
Environmental evaluations under NEPA found no significant impact on the community, the agency reported; A noise study carried out the post-constructing sound levels in nearby houses will remain below 66 decibels, approximately equivalent to conversation noise. The agency declared it coordinated with the United States Army Engineers Corps, the United States Fish and Wild Life Service, and Virginia’s environmental quality department to deal with wetlands and wildlife.
The project is funded through federal, state and local sources, including a subsidy to improve railway infrastructure and consolidated rail infrastructure of $ 100 million, contributions from Virginia’s transport authority and amtrak funds.
The Bypass is part of the transformative initiative of the railway agency in Virginia, which also includes the Franconia -Lorton Third and Long Bridge North projects.
Scott Norman, Executive Vice President of Herzog, said that the joint company “is looking forward to putting this project in time and budget”.
