Grand jury rejects charges in fatal shooting of New Jersey man with backhoe
Police say 20-year-old Joshua Gonzalez used the backhoe to flip cars, including police cars, and hit several homes.
VINELAND, NJ – A New Jersey grand jury has voted not to indict a police sergeant who shot and killed a man who had gone on a violent rampage while operating a backhoe.
Police say 20-year-old Joshua Gonzalez was operating construction equipment irregularly in a Vineland community in December 2021.
Witnesses say that during the incident he hit several houses and overturned cars, including police vehicles.
Authorities, who released body camera video as part of their investigation, say officers tried to get Gonzalez to stop for nearly 30 minutes before the sergeant opened fire, killing Gonzales.
