With a strong construction market, contractors in the Fresno area have seen increased competition. “It is not surprising that there are several bidders in most public works. With last winter’s weather impacts and current rainfall totals, there has been an increased need for emergency repair work and rural road maintenance,” Salcedo says. “But even in a competitive environment , inflation is having an impact on project execution. Prices have been steadily increasing and we’ve seen several projects come in above the engineer’s estimate, forcing those projects back into a redesign and rebid process.
Private development works, housing and warehouses also show strong strength. Salcedo notes that the Highway 99 corridor between Chowchilla and Tulare continues to add warehouse capacity, and there are no signs of slowing down for planned communities and subdivisions.
“Developers seem confident that the region will continue to attract new residents in search of more affordable housing options and relative proximity to Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks,” he says.
