Murphy has secured a £93.4m contract to build the new Cambridge South station.
The company, which is already carrying out preparatory work on the site, has been chosen by National Rail to deliver the station until completion, which is expected to be in 2025.
The two-storey, four-platform facility will improve access to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Europe’s largest medical and health sciences research centre, as well as supporting rapid growth in the area to the south from Cambridge city centre.
The enabling works already carried out on the site include the establishment of the site site, the installation of overhead line poles and the front walls of the platforms.
As well as delivering the new station with accessible facilities, Murphy will work with delivery partners Alstom and the South Rail Systems Alliance to improve rail infrastructure in the area.
These works will include the re-alignment of the existing track, the installation of two additional track loops, the modification of the railway on the southern approach to Cambridge station, the provision of overhead electrification infrastructure and the modification of existing signaling equipment.
The new facility, which is expected to serve 1.8 million passengers a year, will be Cambridge’s third station, acting as a key transport link between the biomedical campus and international gateways such as Stansted Airport and Eurostar.
It will also form part of the proposed route of the future East West Rail line connecting Oxford and Cambridge.
Katie Frost, Network Rail’s director of routes for Anglia, said the award of the delivery contract was a significant milestone for the Cambridge South project.
“I look forward to continuing to work with Murphy as we move into the main work phase and build on the initial enabling work that has already been delivered,” he said.
Murphy Project Director Joe Kennedy said: “[We have] It made significant progress in recent months in completing the enabling works, started the installation of the four platforms, the stacking of the station construction and carried out all the groundwork to facilitate the reorientation of the route during a blockade in December 2023″.
