The United States Department of Transport is planning to start building a project to review the New York City Pennsylvania station in 2027, announced dowry officials on August 27.
Dot plans to start the commitment of the parties interested in contractors this fall, and then publish a request for a master developer at the end of this year, according to a calendar provided by the agency. Officials are planning to select a master developer by the end of May 2026. Preliminary design work would be followed and allowed to be left from the summer of 2026 until the end of 2027, along with the start of construction at the end of 2027.
“Small infrastructure, desolate and dirty architecture, innovable hallways and without welcoming spaces for families with children; the current state of the Penn station is unacceptable,” said United States Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy in a statement.
New York’s Metropolitan Transport Authority had planned a $ 7 billion reconstruction from Amtrak’s owned train station, which also serves the NJ Transit and Long Island Rail passengers. But in April, Dot announced that he moved the authority to the project to Amtrak and cancel a subsidy of $ 72.5 million in MTA because federal officials did not believe that MTA was able to lead the effort.
The movement took place in the middle of an ongoing dispute between Dot and New York officials on the city’s congestion price program, but the leaders of the city and the state expressed their support for the Dot Plan. Following the announcement of the calendar, Governor Kathy Hochul (D) said in a statement that federal participation allowed New York to reassign more than $ 1 billion to other projects.
“With the Secretary Duffy, who advances this project and requesting design proposals, the neoyorcan people are a step closer to a dignified station in this great city,” said Hochul.
In May, Dot presented Andy Byford, a British traffic executive, as a special advisor to the Attrak Board of Directors to lead redevelopment. Byford, who was already a Senior Vice President in Amtrak, was also the President of New York City in New York City.
“The transformation of New York’s Penn Station is underway and usdot and Amtrak are strongly committed to starting construction by the end of 2027,” said Byford.
Dot will provide Amtrak a grant of $ 43 million to support project development and recruitment of master developers.
