APTOS — Traffic on Soquel Drive was snarled Monday afternoon after a piece of construction equipment crashed into a crosswalk at Cabrillo College.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash shortly before 12:30 p.m. Officers found a commercial dump truck towing a trailer with a backhoe on top on the west side of the road. The elevated excavator apparently exceeded the walkway’s 15-foot height limit. CHP Officer Israel Murillo said Monday afternoon that the crash remains under investigation and declined to provide the name of the company involved in the towing accident.

There were no injuries to drivers or pedestrians, confirmed both Murillo and Kristin Fabos, spokeswoman for Cabrillo College. Classes do not resume at the university until January 29.

Damage was limited to property impacts, officials said. Fabos said the pedestrian bridge will remain closed until further notice. Murillo also said the road will remain closed Monday until officials can confirm the bridge does not pose a structural hazard to traffic passing under it.

Motorists were diverted onto Highway 1 and the northbound Perimeter Highway following the crash.

Cabrillo’s facilities department had been carrying out renovations to the bridge in recent months, Fabos said. The bridge itself has been in operation for several years, he said.
