Sent by: Union County Water

Owner: Union County, North Carolina

Main design company: Garney-Hazen/CDM Smith

General contractor: Garney-Hazen/CDM Smith

Civil, Structural, MEP Engineer: Garney-Hazen/CDM Smith

Program manager: HDR

Located next to Charlotte, Union County has grown exponentially over the past few decades. Because of this growth, county leaders sought a sustainable long-term water supply to meet current and future needs. With no viable source of drinking water within its corporate boundaries, Union County worked with neighboring entities to secure essential water resources for its residents.

The $303.8 million project ensures a long-term sustainable water supply for customers in the Yadkin River Basin of Union County. Among its benefits, the City of Norwood can access four times the amount of water compared to its previous facility. The new water catchment facility and increased capacity pumping station replaced World War II-era infrastructure that had not received major renovations since the 1980s. The project also provides the City of Norwood with a new monthly revenue stream. In addition, Stanly County now has access to 1.5 million gallons per day of treated drinking water in the City of Norwood. This amount increases to 2 MGD in 2033. As a result, the project also provides Stanly County with an ongoing revenue stream.
