Award: Rehabilitation of the track
Value: 83.8 million dollars
Location: Baltimore
Customer: Maryland Aviation Administration

The longest commercial runway in Baltimore BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport will undergo major rehabilitation works starting this week, according to a statement from the airport.

The Maryland Aviation Administration tapped a joint venture of Allan Myers and P. Flanigan & Sons to move forward with the key infrastructure upgrade, according to a July 15 announcement. Rehabilitation efforts will begin Wednesday and continue through October 8.

“With this major project, we are improving Maryland’s gateway and improving the heart of Marshall BWI Airport,” Shannetta Griffin, executive director and CEO of the Maryland Aviation Administration, said in the press release. “This runway rehabilitation project will help ensure the long-term safety, reliability and operational efficiency of the airport.”

To safely complete the rehabilitation project, the airport will close Runway 10-28 during the work. That 10,500-foot stretch, the airport’s longest, is one of BWI’s two commercial runways, according to the release. The scope includes milling and paving the track, along with an upgrade to its electrical system to install modern LED track lighting.

The JV team of Worcester, Pa.-based Allan Myers and Baltimore-based P. Flanigan & Sons will also close a second runway, runway 15R-33L, during the night work. These temporary overnight closures will be necessary to accommodate paving work at the intersection of the airport’s two main runways, according to the release.

Outside of scheduled overnight construction periods, Runway 15R-33L will remain fully operational, according to BWI.

The rehabilitation of BWI’s largest runway follows some other notable airport improvements across the country.

For example, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced one Billion dollar upgrade at Miami International Airport in March, where crews will create 17 new aircraft gates and adjacent passenger boarding areas.

Meanwhile, a joint venture between AECOM Hunt Clayco Bowa and the Chicago Department of Aviation began vertical construction of a $1.45 billion upgrade at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, where project crews will build a new 19-gate, 580,000-square-foot Concourse D.

Other airport infrastructure works include a 900 million dollar project at Nashville International Airport and Billion dollar modernization effort at Norfolk International Airport in Virginia.
