Chad Prinkey is the CEO of Well Build Construction Consulting, a company based in Baltimore that offers strategic consulting, facilitation services and round tables for construction executives. Opinions are typical of the author.

The North -Americans are sad.

Each year, multiple national and international studies are performed to evaluate the levels of human happiness. Overwhelmingly, the North -Americans are less happy than we have been in the past and less happy than people in most other economies. This trend is quite consistent with all.

Surprisingly, this trend is based on a context of considerable corporate efforts to make our work force happier. Labor-life balance is fully part of our social vocabulary and it is expected that every good company will make an effort to provide this balance to its employees.

The perspective of the modern employee on work is: “I want a better job-life balance because I can spend more time out of work on things that really care.” To me, this indicates that work is something that does not matter, which the North -Americans are forced to make to obtain income.

Mostly, this has resulted in trying to allow people to work less hours and, in some cases, work from home. The full -time average worker is doing about 4% less hours today than 30 years ago, so he seems to indicate that we are not sadder because of work.

In fact, do you know what I really care about and the happiest people I know? Your job!

I really feel that my work is important. Honestly, I can say that I felt the same even when I was storing tiles on the roofs, mixing mortar for brick masons and frame walls in the field. I can’t imagine feel like spending 40 more hours a week doing something I thought didn’t matter.

Creation of meaning for your template

The simple act of contributing to the largest economy on the planet makes sense. Construction should be especially a deeply rewarding experience focusing on the world around us.

You do not have to do as much as an employer, leader or manager to create meaning for your workforce, apart from remembering the good work and life of which you transform with all the projects.

You can take a step further and develop and communicate a convincing vision for your company and ensure -you know the crucial role they play in driving.

Ultimately, however, the individual must want to find the meaning in his work and this is not something that you can solve. The only thing I know about this is certain that if you allow people who do not worry about their work, you will lose those who care.

Summary: Instead of trying to find ways to work less, we should find ways to help them get more fulfilling their work.
