In engineering, an AI regulatory scalpel is better than a large ban sword

The AI ​​is ready to become the following main engine of economic systems, which promotes the decades of traditional labor practices. AI in all forms and sizes, especially large language models, have exploded in professional spaces as employers and employees go to these systems and test their limits.

The race for the domination of the AI ​​has divided the elected leadership into two broad camps: those who want to establish immediate protections to mitigate some of the potentially harmful impacts of AI, and those who believe that a more pragmatic approach is needed to ensure North -American success.

Although the defeat of the 99-1 of the Senate bill is a clear indication that state leadership does not want a great federal ban to limit its powers, the most recent ads in the White House indicate that the federal government can refuse to cede the problem to the states. North -Americans now have a question to answer: What role should the government play in the regulation of the AI?

One thing is true: AI develops faster than any regulatory body can keep pace. Any regulations that are of nature, whether it aims to promote or limit the AI, it is likely to be obsolete at the time it is fully promulgated. Two things can also be true at the same time: the development and implementation of the AIs are key to creating a competitive economic future for America, and regulation is an essential part of achieving a totally unlocked future for AI.

The problem with something like a direct ban is that it paints a AI under a brush too wide, treating all the isos of the AI ​​as more or less equal. However, Ai is not just something; It encompasses more than just Chatgpt, Gemini or Claude. It is not only used to make silly videos, surrealists or memories and drafts. Increasingly, we are seeing that AI develops and unfolds in more risky and higher environments. Financial systems, healthcare systems and infrastructure engineering systems have begun trying and trying to find real responses to real problems. From the credibility of the loan to the diagnoses of health and the triage, more and interact with real human problems, greater is the possibility that a mistake will have potentially devastating consequences.

Especially in industries such as infrastructure engineering and science, which depend greatly on accuracy and accuracy, a direct prohibition on the regulation of the AI ​​could be dangerous. Without clear regulations, engineering companies could easily transmit designs generated by AI as an original work. Developers and builders could more and more trust machine models and calculations, relying on them as precise, even without human supervision.

It is a world in which bridges become less stable, buildings begin to crack -and hydroelectric plants cannot contain water, and it is what we live today. Lives could be a real risk due to an excess of confidence in the AI.

This does not mean that AI is bad or those with higher risk professions do not have to use it. Instead, the demand of the AI ​​in these cases is so specific and the risk of failure is so high that governments, or some regulatory body, must play a role to determine what is appropriate and what is not, just as they play a role today in the government of these professions.

Regulation, especially in these high -risk industries, acts as a playing level to protect both its consumers and itself. AI regulation is comparable to the brakes of a race car. The aim of the race car is to go not only fast, but also to be the fastest and the brakes help them to do it, giving drivers to control and offering security even at the top speeds. AI needs regulatory “brakes” for high -participation industries to help companies define the limits of using AI so that it can channel the speed and power towards their development and use.

The great sweep regulations will not reach us and will not be obtained by major prohibitions. The key to AI regulation is to start small, start specific and be agile. The biggest problem with the use of engineering is that AI is essentially a “black box” system with training data, interior work and reasoning systems that are not visible or understandable, even for AI researchers. In a science based on rules such as engineering, this inexplicability of AI presents significant risks, especially the risk of construction.

Instead of banning the use of the IA in the entire engineering, regulators should start small, focused on a granular level of risk and quality. It undermines the utility of the IA to require that the humans double each calculation of the AI. However, regulators may and must be able to define critical components that require human verification and explanation. Can the beam layout be explained in a structure? Humans have verified the location and extent of an engineering “model” for accuracy and safety? How much and what was the quality of your training sets?

These are specific regulations in the industry that are only relevant to the engineering and infrastructure industry, but they are vital to ensure that the profession is of good reputation and safe. It is not a matter of reducing the potential of the IA to transform the industry or reduce costs, but to say that what makes these industries so vital.

Regulation can provide clear borders that reduce uncertainty, allowing ethical innovation to prosper. With a federal prohibition that is no longer at the table, it is time for regulatory legislators to take the mantle. AI’s success in America is dependent.
