Perched atop a post-tensioned concrete parking structure, this $34 million, 48,770-square-foot sports complex includes a full-size basketball court, locker rooms, support spaces for the neighboring aquatics center, classrooms and administrative spaces.
Since the project is located between the school’s main campus and an existing field house, the team had to guide student movement through the active workplace using a temporary, elevated pedestrian walkway that allowed students to safely move from one area to another.
Ensuring correct soil accumulation was essential for the new space to fit the exterior elevations and align with the existing weight constraints of the post-tensioned slab. But the structure was not square and the intended connection points did not align with the new layout of the building.
Thus, the team performed detailed mapping and scanning to identify PT tendons for all connection points and pipe penetrations through the slabs to ensure proper alignment.
Completion of the design of a feature stone retaining wall was delayed and required material from an Italian quarry. The project team coordinated with the supplier to ensure that the materials arrived before the end of the project in September 2024.
