Skanska and joint venture partner Halmar International LLC have been awarded a contract by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) to perform the $1.24 billion design and rebuild project at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK Airport) to improve its road network.

The design and construction project will focus on the highways, utilities and ground transportation hub (GTC) of the Central Terminal area in Queens, New York. Parsons Corp. will serve as lead designer for the JV and the project will improve roads in the airport area creating an easier way to navigate and a more user-friendly experience.

The project includes the design and construction of the airport road transportation network, which includes road reconfiguration, traffic maintenance and protection, intuitive navigation, improved traffic technologies, level pavements, retaining walls and bridges, as well as relocations and improvements to public services. . The project will improve user connectivity and access to surrounding terminals. Also included is the design and construction of a modern ground transportation center that will include:

  • A multi-level car park, with 1,950 parking spaces, equipped with charging points for electric vehicles and an ecological wooden facade.
  • A 122 m (400 ft) long elevated pedestrian bridge with canopies.
  • Rainwater collection facility.
  • Energy efficiency provisions for solar panels.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to design and build a world-class ground gateway for one of New York’s busiest international aviation hubs,” said Michael Viggiano, executive vice president of the civil region of the Skanska USA East Coast. “The project will not only improve the connectivity of JFK’s road network, but also improve the overall experience of passengers traveling there from the airport.”
