How far apart should the fence posts be? Spacing guide by type of fence: direct mini-rails

Spacing is the decision that determines your bill of materials, your hours of work, and whether your fence will collapse in five years. How far apart the fence posts should be depends on what the fence is made of, how much wind or tension it carries, and what the ground does between the two ends of the run. This guide provides the center standard, spacing by fence type, how to adjust to the terrain, and how to count the posts before you buy anything. FAST RESPONSE

Fence posts are usually spaced 6 to 8 feet on center for most residential fences. Wood privacy and picket fences typically use 6 to 8 feet, chain link allows up to 10 feet, and high tension or agricultural fences can stretch 10 to 20 feet between posts depending on terrain and load.

What does “at the center” mean and why is it important?

Fence spacing is always measured in the center, meaning from the middle of one post to the middle of the next, not from the inside face of one to the inside face of the next. On the other hand, measuring edge to edge will leave you short by a post width in each bay, which will translate into several feet of error in the long run and a rail that won’t make it.

Run a string line between the two end posts, mark each post center along it, and check your marks against the full length of the run before digging. Adjusting a mark takes seconds. It takes a day to adjust a fixed post.

Fence post spacing by fence type

  • Wooden privacy fence. 6 to 8 feet on center. Six feet is the safest default in windy areas and for panels 8 feet high, because a solid privacy panel is a sail and each additional foot of span increases the load on the mast.
  • Picket and garden fence. 6 to 8 feet on center. Pre-assembled panels dictate spacing, so measure one panel and place it in place of the opposite.
  • chain link Up to 10 feet on center, which is the maximum common in most residential codes. The fabric passes the wind instead of trapping it, so the masts carry less load per foot of span.
  • Vinyl and composite. Whatever the manufacturer specifies, usually 6 or 8 feet, because vinyl rails are designed for an exact span. Deviation from specifications voids most warranties.
  • Ranch rail and split rail. 8 to 10 feet, set by the length of the rail. The rails are usually 8, 10, or 11 feet long and must land on post centers.
  • Woven wire and field fence. 10 to 16 feet on center on flat, consistent ground, with shorter spaces where the ground rolls.
  • High resistance thread. 16 to 20 feet or more between line posts, with droppers or stays between them to keep wire spacing consistent. The tension on the cable, not the poles, maintains the geometry.
  • Electric fence, temporary or rotary. 20 to 50 feet with step on poles.

Adjustment of the spacing by the terrain

A spacing number assumes flat and uniform terrain. Real fence lines rarely cooperate.

  • unevenness Spacing is measured horizontally, not along the surface. On a grade, the distance you go through the floor is longer than the actual center distance, so reduce the gap on any significant slope or your panels will not fit.
  • Peaks and dips Put a stick at the top of each rise and at the bottom of each gap. Skipping it is what creates a fence that floats above the ground in one place and is buried in another.
  • Changes and changes of direction. A stick at every change of direction, no exceptions, and is a corner stick rather than a line stick.
  • Soft ground and exposure to the wind. Reduce spacing. On an open ridge, dropping an 8-foot to 6-foot solid panel fence on center is the cheapest structural upgrade available.

How to calculate post count

  1. Measure the total stroke in feet. Walk it with a wheel or stretch a tape, following the actual line of the fence, including each corner.
  2. Divide by your space. A 200-foot run with an 8-foot gap is 25 legs.
  3. Add one. Each run needs a post at both ends, so 25 bays need 26 posts. This is the step people skip.
  4. Add a post for each corner and change of direction. Corners are not line posts and must be counted and dimensioned separately.
  5. Add two posts per door. Door posts are always their own order line and should be heavier than the posts around them.
  6. Even in bays. If 200 feet with 8-foot spacing leaves an awkward 3-foot bay at the end, use 7-foot, 2-inch spacing in 28 bays. Even the bays look intentional; a short bay seems like a mistake.
  7. Add 5 to 10 percent for breakage. Posts split, holes hit rock, and designs change on the spot.

Dimension of the auger according to the spacing plan

Once the design is established, the hole is the next constraint. A common guideline is a hole about three times the width of the stick, so:

  • 4×4 wooden line pole. 10 to 12 inch auger bit.
  • 6×6 wooden corner or door post. 14 to 18 inch bit.
  • 2 to 2.5 inch steel chain link post. 8 to 10 inch bit for line posts, 10 to 12 for terminals.
  • Round wooden ranch post, 4 to 5 inches. 10 to 12 inch bit.

Match the drive unit to the machine before matching the bit to the post. Auger units are rated for hydraulic flow and torque, and an undersized unit will stop in a 12-inch hole in clay all day. Miniature auger drives and bits cover the standard and high-flow range, with mini tillers for backyard access and excavator auger drives where you need to reach over a ditch or slope. Also check the carrier against your door width, using the weight and dimensions on the thumbnail.

When to drive the posts instead of digging them

The wide space and long routes are where mail drivers earn their keep. A farm fence 16 to 20 feet apart over half a mile means hundreds of posts and no concrete, and a hydraulic driver sets them at a rate that no auger and concrete crew will match. Because the driver compacts undisturbed soil around the pole rather than filling a hole, the pole also resists lateral pull well, which matters when the cable is under tension.

  • Mixer and set corners, ends, doors and brace assemblies, which carry unbalanced load.
  • Driving on slopes with a driver mounted on an excavator when a wheeled machine cannot safely hold the line.
