St. JOHN’S, NL – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says two backhoe bandits made off with merchandise from the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation store on Blackmarsh Road Tuesday morning, December 12th.

When officers turned up after the alarms at around 4:45am, they found extensive damage to the front of the building and, shortly after, a piece of heavy equipment abandoned in nearby Melville Place.

Police quickly determined the backhoe had been stolen from a nearby business and used to break in.

“A suspect entered the store on foot wearing a black tank top, a gray crew neck sweater, beige pants, a black cross body bag and was holding what appeared to be a black reusable bag,” according to the RNC.

“The other suspect was wearing a dark colored jacket, jeans and white high top trainers with a black Nike symbol.”

Anyone with video footage of the area between 3:30 and 5 a.m. or information about the incident is asked to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at nlcrimestoppers.com.

Meanwhile, Urban Market 1919 on LeMarchant Road had its backhoe stolen overnight. SaltWire is trying to confirm if the two incidents are connected.
