The California Highway Patrol East Sacramento is reminding truck drivers to check the highest point of their load after a backhoe boom hit an overpass in California on Wednesday.
The incident happened on Wednesday, September 24 on US 50 eastbound at the Bradshaw Road overpass.
According to CHP East Sacramento, the driver of the truck failed to properly secure the bucket arm of a backhoe before going under the overpass, causing the top of the arm to hit the bridge. A 6- to 10-inch chunk of concrete was knocked down in the incident.
The bridge strike also caused oil to spill from the backhoe and onto the roadway, as well as onto a vehicle traveling directly behind the tractor trailer.
CalTrans later determined that the overpass damage did not pose an immediate danger. As a result of the accident, no lanes were closed and no one was injured.
“Moral of the story: Be sure to secure your cargo properly and check the highest point of your cargo before you leave on your trip,” CHP wrote on social media.
