Denver City Council voted on Monday to advance an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) between the city and the Broadway station District number 1 in the 1st district of $ 70 million on land acquisition and improvements that will allow construction at a stage of 14,500 places for the new national women’s football team in the city.
Although the vote does not approve all the aspects of the proposed project, it maintains the option of building the stadium for the team not yet called within a disinfected property in Denver. The agreement will allow the city to spend $ 50 million on the Earth and an additional $ 20 million to build a park, roads and a bridge of 3.5 hectares and a bridge in the area using 10 -year -old Denver Bond Program, of $ 937 million, approved by voters in 2017.
The stadium will be designed by Populous and built on 14 hectares of land not developed in Santa Fe Yards of the I-25 and Broadway in Denver. It will be the first sports and entertainment district built for sports women in Colorado and the second stage in the world. The entertainment district is part of the Transit Broadway Station Mixed Transit Development, a currently under developed place created when the Gates rubber company factories were demolished in 2014.
In the meantime, a 20,000-square-meter modular stadium will be built in conjunction with the construction of the training facility in Centennial, Colo, about 15 kilometers southeast of Denver. This will serve as the club’s house until the permanent stadium opens in 2028. Populous is also designing the temporary stadium.
The NWSL team is brought to Denver by the group of a owner led by Rob Cohen, chairman and CEO of the IMA Financial Group, which plans to build the stadium for an estimated cost of $ 150 million to $ 200 million. Some members of the Board expressed their concern about using taxpayers’ funds to help a private property group build a private stage and acknowledged the possibility of the group requesting a refund of the tax revenue construction project generated by stadium sales. Others shared their concern for $ 70 million to a football stadium at a time when Denver faces a “tremendous need for funds to improve roads, build support homes and other critical needs.”
Ultimately, the IGA approved the 11-1 in which the President of the Denver City Council, Amanda Sandoval, named a “hand between the city and the NWSL, which pledged to take the project to the next step”.
The women’s football team will play at the Temporary Stadium for the NWSL 2026 and 2027 seasons. Once the team moves to their permanent home, this stadium will be reduced to 4,000 seats and used by the Cherry Creek school district.
