one of the top commercial contractors in 2025 began work last month on a health facility project in Modesto, California.

DPR Construction, a Redwood, California-based general contractor, started on January 15th in a new Advanced Cancer Center and Care Complex for Sutter Health, a not-for-profit healthcare system based in Sacramento, California. The builder will work under a collaborative integrated project delivery approach, which allows for a better design and construction process, Abe Sipes, DPR’s Sacramento business unit leader, told Construction Dive..

The method brings together the parties involved in the design, manufacturing and construction aspects of a project into a single agreement. HGA, a Minneapolis-based commercial architecture firm, designed the project.

The collaboration will result in significant efficiency improvements, Sipes said. He added that the DPR team is using lean construction methods to deliver the facility.

Once complete, the estimated $380 million project will feature four stories and 165,000 square feet of modernized, patient-centered space, according to a news release from Sutter.

“This new complex will serve as a destination for care in the Central Valley, offering advanced cancer services along with ambulatory care and a surgery center,” said Warner Thomas, president and CEO of Sutter Health. “It ensures that patients can count on coordinated, high-quality care in multiple specialties in one place.”

The first and second floors will house the Advanced Cancer Care Center. The center will be an all-inclusive site that will offer clinic visits, access to numerous cancer tests, infusion and radiation therapy, imaging, laboratory, pharmacy and multiple complementary therapies, according to the release.

On the third floor, DPR will add the ambulatory surgery center. The space will include four operating rooms, four procedure rooms and additional space for future expansion. This will be Sutter’s first ambulatory surgery center in Modesto, according to the release.

Finally, the fourth floor will have more than 25 doctors and 50 exam rooms. DPR plans to open the facility in 2029.
