Grill of the city

Steven Perrigo
Vice President and Company Director
Turner Construction Co.
Sports, education, manufacturing and affordable housing are “thriving” in Buffalo, Perrigo says. Many projects have been online for several years, indicating the city’s success in attracting business. “This highlights the attractiveness of the region for investment and addresses pent-up demand,” he says.
But AEC companies still struggle “to find the right workforce to complete their projects.” says Perrigo. “Competition for local graduates is intense and industry is struggling to replace employees lost to attrition.”
Unlike sports, education and manufacturing, commercial, office and multifamily residential projects have gotten off to a slower start, in part due to rising interest rates, although Perrigo is optimistic that “ they could recover soon.” The healthcare sector has seen a temporary slowdown as it recovers from pandemic-related spending, but expects it to “regain momentum in the near future.”
“A lot of the projects that will go out to bid in the next two or three months will run until 2024 and probably until 2026,” he says.
