Trent Mostaert says he has the most beautiful job in the world.
In recent years, the Vice President of the Industrialization of Mortenson, based on Minneapolis, has been monitoring physical artificial intelligence. This is the area of how to marry and optimize physical and digital tools to support workers in their particular environment.
Mostaert’s particular experience is presented in the field of solar installations on an industrial scale, where Robots fed by AI They have been creating great raids.
Here, Mostaert talks to Construction Dive about what he has learned in the last two years of technology, his mentality for people when it comes to processing processes and a warning for those who try to innovate too quickly.

Construction division: What should people in Physics know?
Trent Mostaert: Each task has a heartbeat.
In a solar project, distribute a battery every five seconds. At 30 batteries, you have to go for another load. It is a cycle of five seconds, five seconds, five seconds and then five minutes. This is the heartbeat of that simple task.
At the end of each task, you would get two data: You would know what your production was and you would know how many artisanal hours were needed to do.
Now, as we have integrated more digital control systems into our equipment, each team can generate 10 million data points.
What do you do, then, with all this data? How do you organize so that you can look at what should be the heartbeat of each activity and optimize -throughout the fleet or the crews? How do you assure you that everything works as planned?
Most importantly, once the heartbeat stops, once you are flat, who and when does anyone have to notify? And how do they react to this topic? And as it becomes more sophisticated, how can we automate with AI?
What are some of the lessons you learned about technology?
I have always been excited about lean construction, but I felt that most of my focus would be more to create training and equipment tools, automate them and try to find out how to make the I work with them.

In fact, what I learned was that we really needed to go back and focus on our people, put people in the center and understand the work. Our best ideas always come from our field.
So it was more than a hug from the field, how things happen at work and how we facilitate the work for our craft members, developing solutions that meet their needs.
You attended the West West Buildworlds Venture conference and talked about Physics. What is this?
The concept of physics is interesting.
As we have been industrializing, for us, it is really the fusion of the physical world, for us, which means the teams and tools and the work environment, with the digital world. This includes everything approaching, the mega trends, and then also merging -in the human world or the bio world.
Thus, fusing biohuman systems, the physical world and the digital world is what we do with i4 or the fourth industrialization, which is the fusion of all these systems.
When you think of physics, this is only to create smart solutions with the physical world, which is mostly equipment.
We have excavators in our jobs. People have added intelligence, such as automation and sensors and control systems.
How does Mortenson have to adapt to this new age of industrialization while maintaining a human-centered approach?
When you think about implementing Physics in the world, you must follow an order.
First, you have to start people at the center of work and make it easier. Second, you need to implement better processes, tools and equipment. You need to remove waste from the system. Otherwise, only automate the wasted process. Once you have done all this, you can start automating and integrating the AI into the system.
Which one for takeament you have obtained to follow this process?
You never have to automate -you do not understand technology. If you do not understand technology, you will end up with many trouble implementing technology that will not be reliable. If you don’t understand it, it’s hard to keep working.
