It is understood it is planning to demolish the existing Bankside House rooms next to the Tate Modern gallery to make way for a larger complex.
The university revealed the plan as it launched a search for a joint venture development partner to lead plans for the £400m project.
Plans remain incomplete but it is understood the new student accommodation complex should be delivered by the mid-2030s.
