Mini excavators are quickly becoming popular with all types of contractors, thanks to their versatile and compact design. But while your mini excavator may seem small, it works just as hard as its larger brothers. And it has all the same working parts as a big machine. Not everyone discloses, that when a mini excavator breaks down, it’s because the machine was not maintained properly. In this blog, we’ll discuss maintenance guides that guide operators to ensure your mini excavator lives a long and healthy life.

Track tension

Most of the mini excavators have these rubber tracks, so proper tensioning is vital. If the tension is not tightened the loose track will wear out faster. You’ll have to stop the mini excavator to replace the track before you plan to do so. If the track is too tight, the rubber will tear, causing other working components to wear, especially sprockets, front idlers, and traction motors.

Grease

Grease is the main lubricant agent for all types of construction equipment. Grease points may not be seen directly so you don’t overlook anything. Don’t make a mess by using extra, remember that more is not better. One to three shots of grease should be enough.

Gearbox

The main component of an engine is a gearbox it is essential, and it’s expensive as well. Yet it, too, is often overlooked — especially when it’s covered in mud. Plan to change the oil after every 1,000 hours. It’s a very quick job since the mini excavator gearbox holds only one-half to one quart of oil. It might help you to remember if you know that propel drive gearboxes frequently fail when they’ve reached 1,500-3,000 hours. As with all other motors, old oil starts to degrade and ceases to do its job.

Hydraulic oil

As with time Oil starts losing its ability to protect, too. Just because your hydraulic oil looks clean doesn’t mean it is. As it loses its viscosity, it can no longer keep contaminants in suspension or absorb moisture that may get into the system. That can cause damage to the hydraulic components that operate within tight tolerances. You’ve already reached this point by the time hydraulic oil starts to become cloudy. Try to change this oil every 2,000-4,000 hours. And make sure you’re using the manufacturer’s recommended oil.

Paperwork

Paperwork records of your machinery maintenance are very useful if you are managing a large fleet of construction machinery. and keeping records is tedious. However, it is as essential as the maintenance itself. Correct service records for each mini excavator help you know when it’s time to perform needed actions and help ensure you’re using the right lubricants & fluids, etc. The more machinery in your construction fleet, the more important record-keeping becomes. You cannot remember all this in your head.

Over time the data tells you how well each mini excavator is performing. That way, when it’s time for a new mini excavator – or another one – you’ll know if you want the same make or something different.

Every mini excavator OEM uses somewhat different specs. For all these maintenance procedures and guidelines, be sure to consult your owner’s manual to find the proper measurements, fluids, lubricants, & Oils, etc. to use for your machine.
