The project team made substantial updates to the existing process units, including the central pumping station, a new intermediate pumping station, EQ storage and a new heading installation. The air systems were replaced, the sludge bombs were renewed, and a new ultraviolet disinfection system was added for the effluent of secondary plants.
The crews installed an extensive channel of 84-day gardens below active gas lines and a promotion of railway, a task that required a careful planning and execution. In addition, the UV disinfection building needed important structural modifications maintaining a continuous operating flow through the exit of the structure.
The new UV disinfection system is more environmentally friendly and safer for the community. The existing ultraviolet disinfection structure was a system of serpentine chlorine disinfection, which needed the use of 90 tonnes of chlorine gas cars, which raised a security concern for the local community. To safely move to the new UV system, the team sequenced the work to modify one side of the structure at the same time while maintaining the flow on the other side. The engineers designed custom steel walls to divert or stop the flow effectively in the work area. The new UV system includes a pre-designed metal building of 10,800 square meters that houses two parshall flums 12 feet wide and 12 benches.
The $ 415.8 million project, which was completed in time and budget, reached Leed Gold certification.
