Founded in 1931 by Frank Edward Moran as a boiler and radiator installation company, FE Moran, headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, has grown into a national specialty contractor providing mechanical, plumbing, sheet metal, fire protection, refrigeration, industrial piping and special hazard systems to mission critical facilities nationwide.
Today, FE Moran, which remains family-owned under the leadership of third-generation President and CEO Brian Moran, continues to grow.
In 2025, FE Moran reported revenue of $515 million, up from $432 million in 2024, and employs approximately 1,550 people across the region. The company’s work spans industries where reliability is essential, including data centers, hospitals, industrial manufacturing, energy facilities, aviation infrastructure, food processing and high-rise construction.
Recent projects demonstrate the breadth of FE Moran’s experience. In Aurora, Illinois, the company completed a mission-critical data center renovation, including advanced controls and cooling plant upgrades, while maintaining uninterrupted operations. In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he designed and installed a comprehensive fire protection system for a nearly 300,000-square-foot data center, including more than 3,000 sprinkler heads and multiple pre-action systems.
The company also provided critical industrial piping services to the BP Whiting Refinery and completed extensive plumbing infrastructure for the 1.4 million square foot Westville Correctional Facility in Indiana, installing more than 200,000 linear feet of piping and plumbing systems across the campus.
Beyond project delivery, FE Moran is committed to strengthening the future of the construction industry. Through their internship program, students gain hands-on experience in HVAC, plumbing, refrigeration, piping, and fire protection while working alongside experienced professionals on active projects. The program reflects the company’s long-standing investment in developing the next generation of construction leaders.
In recognition of its business excellence and support of the construction industry at large, FE Moran has been named ENR Midwest’s 2026 Specialty Contractor of the Year and will be featured in the September 7 issue of ENR Midwest.
