Saudi Diesel Equipment Company (SDEC) is looking to strengthen its presence in the kingdom’s rapidly evolving construction equipment sector through its alliance with India’s Mahindra, focusing on the requirements arising from infrastructure, industrial and municipal businesses, along with the country’s growing machinery rental industry. This collaboration, dedicated exclusively to Mahindra’s line of backhoe loaders, combines Mahindra’s technical prowess with SDEC’s commercial, maintenance and spares logistics footprint in Saudi Arabia, as Hazem Shahin, director of sales, told Gulf Construction.
Shahin pointed out that building the kingdom’s infrastructure requires machinery that is reliable, efficient and supported by the support of the country. He added that the alliance meets these demands by merging Mahindra’s established engineering with SDEC’s maintenance centers and parts supply chain, thereby shortening reaction times. SDEC also collaborates with Mahindra technical staff to refine and improve product attributes based on local customer feedback.
This agreement comes as Saudi Arabia moves forward with large-scale infrastructure and development initiatives linked to Vision 2030, which support the ongoing needs of earthmoving equipment in road construction, utilities, land preparation and varied construction projects. While Mahindra offers a wide international range of construction machinery, SDEC’s Saudi collaboration is currently limited to its backhoes. Within this assortment, Shahin singled out Mahindra EarthMaster SXL and VX as causing the most significant interest from buyers in the kingdom.
These units have a bucket capacity of 1.1 cubic meters and a dredging depth approaching 4.9 meters, while their fuel-efficient common-rail direct injection engines are designed to handle the varied loading, trenching and site preparation tasks typical of Saudi jobsites. Shahin emphasized that the combination of adaptability and operational profitability has particular appeal to contractors and rental operators who aim to optimize machine utilization while keeping expenses under control.
SDEC sees infrastructure and utilities work as a perfect fit for Mahindra units. Shahin noted that these backhoes are best suited for infrastructure and utility tasks such as road construction, pipe and conduit trenching, and land grading, as well as municipal maintenance and rental fleet operations. In these contexts, the machines’ ability to perform both loading and digging with a single piece of equipment offers the greatest benefit.
Working conditions introduce another key factor in the Saudi equipment market, where intense heat, airborne particles and rough terrain put extra strain on power plants, hydraulic systems and other parts. Shahin indicated that Mahindra machinery supplied for Gulf environments incorporates design elements intended to preserve reliability in difficult working situations. These include improved cooling systems, robust air filtration and parts chosen for high temperature operation.
For Saudi infrastructure and excavation tasks, the machines also integrate features aimed at increasing production and operator convenience. Shahin highlighted attributes such as a substantial dredging depth, a side-scrolling backhoe that allows operation close to buildings and buried utilities, and ergonomic joystick controls that reduce operator fatigue during extended shifts, making the series well-suited to Saudi earthmoving work. Construction specifications are also tailored to local circumstances, with reinforced landing gear and cooling configurations designed for extended use in sandy and dusty environments.
With fuel making up a significant portion of the equipment’s running costs, efficiency represents another avenue where SDEC believes it can differentiate the Mahindra range. The company says it works with Mahindra to deliver machinery that maximizes fuel economy, with engine design and system controls that help with both performance and reduced exhaust output.
The focus on operating expenses is transferred to the monitoring and maintenance of the machines. SDEC offers telematics and remote control systems as an optional extra, allowing customers to monitor equipment performance and service intervals. Shahin explained that TMS is one of the main optional features offered to customers, providing data on machine performance and maintenance schedules, improving fleet monitoring and reducing unexpected downtime, all of which contribute to lower lifetime operating costs.
Mahindra has also updated its EarthMaster series of backhoes with a more powerful engine, a more spacious and comfortable operator’s cab and iMAXX telematics for remote monitoring of fleets and equipment. SDEC is working hard to introduce these upgrades to Saudi customers, building on its current telematics-equipped offerings.
SDEC supports equipment sales with operator training and technical assistance, leveraging its home service network as a cornerstone of Mahindra’s value proposition. The company provides operator orientation and model-specific training at the time of delivery, addressing safe operating practices, routine maintenance inspections and site safety guidelines, administered by its qualified technical staff. SDEC measures the success of its training and support through customer input, machine availability, and documentation of incidents and service requests over the life of the equipment.
Shahin stated that the combination of Mahindra’s engineering strengths with SDEC’s national sales and after sales network gives the partnership a strong foundation to compete for customers looking for reliable machinery and close support. The equipment rental industry is gaining prominence as a demand driver as contractors aim to control capital expenditures and source machinery based on project needs. SDEC anticipates that this pattern will strengthen demand for adaptable machines such as backhoes.
Shahin noted that demand for earthmoving equipment in Saudi Arabia is steadily increasing, driven by Vision 2030 mega-projects, infrastructure growth and the growing adoption of rental-based purchase of equipment. He sees Mahindra as being within the mid-level market, where buyers are looking for a combination of flexibility, reliability and value for money.
