Saudi Diesel Equipment Company (SDEC) is looking to strengthen its position in Saudi Arabia’s expanding construction equipment market through its partnership with Indian manufacturer Mahindra, targeting demand for infrastructure, industrial and municipal projects, as well as the country’s growing equipment rental sector.
The partnership, which focuses exclusively on Mahindra’s range of backhoe loaders, combines Mahindra’s engineering capabilities with SDEC’s sales, service and parts distribution infrastructure in the kingdom, explains Hazem Shahin, director of sales, Gulf Construction.
“Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure expansion requires reliable, efficient and locally supported equipment,” says Shahin. “Our partnership addresses these needs by combining Mahindra’s proven engineering with SDEC’s service center and parts distribution network, enabling faster response times.”
He says SDEC is also working closely with Mahindra’s engineering team to adapt and improve product features in response to customer requirements in Saudi Arabia.
The alliance comes as Saudi Arabia continues to roll out major infrastructure and development programs under Vision 2030, creating sustained requirements for earthmoving equipment for roads, utilities, site development and other construction projects.
While Mahindra has an extensive portfolio of international construction equipment, SDEC’s Saudi partnership currently concentrates on its backhoes. Within the range, Shahin identifies the Mahindra EarthMaster SXL and VX as attracting the most interest from Saudi customers.
The machines have a bucket capacity of 1.1m3 and a dredging depth of close to 4.9m, while their fuel-efficient common-rail direct injection (CRDI) engines are designed to support the multipurpose loading, trenching and site development applications frequently found on Saudi projects.
The combination of versatility and operating economy is particularly relevant to contractors and rental fleets looking to maximize equipment utilization while controlling operating costs, says Shahin.
SDEC sees infrastructure and service work as a particularly strong application for Mahindra machines.
“Mahindra backhoes are best suited for utility and infrastructure projects such as roadworks, pipelines and cable trenches, and site grading, as well as municipal maintenance and rental fleet deployment,” he says. “In these applications, the machine’s versatility to combine loading and digging in a single unit provides maximum value.”
Operating conditions present another important consideration in the Saudi equipment market, where high ambient temperatures, dust and abrasive terrain can place additional demands on engines, hydraulic systems and other components. Shahin says the Mahindra equipment supplied for Gulf conditions incorporates features aimed at maintaining reliability in demanding operating environments.
“Typical features include improved cooling systems, heavy duty air filtration and components selected for high temperature operation.”
For Saudi earthmoving and infrastructure applications, the machines also incorporate features aimed at improving productivity and operator comfort.
“Features such as a strong dredging depth, a side-shift backhoe for working close to structures and utilities, and ergonomic joystick controls that reduce operator fatigue during long shifts make the range suitable for Saudi earthworks,” notes Shahin.
Configurations are also tailored to local operating conditions, including reinforced landing gear and cooling packages designed for sustained operation in abrasive and dusty environments.
With fuel representing a significant component of equipment operating costs, efficiency is another area in which SDEC sees an opportunity to differentiate the Mahindra range. The company says it is working with Mahindra to provide equipment that optimizes fuel consumption, with engine technology and system controls that contribute to both efficiency and lower emissions.
The emphasis on operating costs extends to equipment monitoring and maintenance. SDEC offers telematics and remote control capabilities as an option, allowing customers to track machine performance and maintenance requirements.
“TMS is one of the main features offered to our customers as an option,” says Shahin. “It provides insight into equipment performance and maintenance schedules, improves fleet management and helps reduce unplanned downtime, all of which lowers lifecycle operating costs.”
Mahindra has also enhanced its range of EarthMaster backhoes with a more powerful engine, a larger and more comfortable operator’s cab and iMAXX telematics for remote fleet and equipment monitoring. SDEC is working to deliver these enhancements to Saudi customers, complementing its existing telematics offering.
SDEC supports equipment sales with operator training and technical support, with the company looking to use its local service infrastructure as a key element of Mahindra’s proposition.
“SDEC offers operator induction training and machine-specific training at delivery, covering safe operating procedures, routine maintenance checks and site safety protocols, delivered by our trained technical team,” says Shahin.
The company tracks the effectiveness of its training and support through customer feedback, machine uptime, and incident and service call logs throughout the equipment’s operational life.
Shahin says the combination of Mahindra’s engineering capabilities and SDEC’s kingdom-wide sales and aftersales network gives the partnership a platform to compete for customers looking for reliable equipment and local support.
The equipment rental sector is emerging as an increasingly important source of demand as contractors look to manage capital expenditure and access machinery according to project requirements. SDEC expects this trend to support demand for versatile machines such as backhoes.
“Demand for earthmoving equipment in Saudi Arabia continues to grow steadily, driven by Vision 2030 giga-projects, infrastructure expansion and the growing shift towards equipment rental as a delivery model,” says Shahin.
It sees Mahindra occupying a position in the mid-market segment, where customers are looking for a combination of versatility, reliability and cost-effectiveness.
