Skanska completes first phase of Florida ER’s $400 million expansion

Skanska USA has completed the first phase of a $400 million Florida hospital job.

The US arm of the Swedish builder completed the initial stage of renovation and expansion of the emergency room at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, according to a press release shared with Construction Dive.

The new 178,000-square-foot addition to the facility doubled the original emergency room floor space.

The facility includes 60 general exam rooms, four resuscitation rooms, six triage rooms and 12 fast-track rooms, according to the announcement. A second floor dedicated to patient care contains 50 observation rooms and seven acute care rooms.

According to Skanska, patients will also have access to an on-site pharmacy and a full radiology suite with MRI, CT, X-ray and ultrasound capabilities.

To build the structure, Skanska needed demolish two existing buildings to create space. In 2023, the contractor won an award of $90 million to carry out this work.

For the second phase of the project, the construction team will continue to expand the existing 45,000-square-foot emergency room, with 121 adult emergency rooms, dedicated behavioral health bays and 30 pediatric emergency rooms, according to the release. Renovations are underway, with completion expected in 2027, according to the announcement.

Meanwhile, a planned the third phase will include a new third floor with additional clinical space and improved access to the heliport, according to Jackson Health System.

The news comes as health facilities continue to do so give a boost to the construction sector: They, along with data centers, helped boost planning numbers in May, according to the Dodge Construction Network.

It’s not the first health project in Florida that Skanska has achieved a major milestone this year. In March, the company topped $435 million Lee Health Fort Myers campus. Then in April, the builder delivered one Redmond, Oregon, 53,000 sq. ft. cancer center.
