One of Skanska’s infrastructure segments will have a new leader on January 1.

Bill Matre, CEO of Skanska Koch, will hand over the reins to Michael Donohuestarting Jan. 1, according to a Dec. 15 announcement from Skanska. Matre will continue to serve as senior vice president as he moves toward retirement.

Donohue joined Skanska Koch in 2000 as superintendent of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway project. He has served as project manager, senior project manager and vice president of the company. As Matre’s successor, Donohue will oversee overall operations and lead long-term strategic planning.

“As Bill steps down from his role as CEO, Michael’s continued leadership ensures the right path for our employees, customers and partners,” said Michael Viggiano, executive vice president of the Eastern Region of Skanska USA Civil, of which Skanska Koch is a part, in the press release.

Matre first joined Skanska Koch, a division of Skanska that has historically worked on bridges and other infrastructure efforts, as an intern in 1982, according to the news release. It was the same year that the company, originally named Karl Koch Steel Erecting, was acquired by Skanska. Matre became a full-time field engineer in 1983 and rose through the ranks before being appointed general manager in 2017.

Over the past 40 years, Matre has been involved in projects that include the orthotropic deck of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, the first floating bridge on 207th Street, JFK AirTrain, 9/11 recovery and cleanup and the Bayonne Bridge, according to the press release.

While under Matre’s leadership, the company re-entered the Philadelphia market and expanded its business, according to the press release.

The succession plan is part of a pattern of other moves Skanska has made this year. Leo Sinicin, the CFO of Skanska USA, will retire effective December 31 and will be succeeded by Dan DeRooythe current vice president of finance for Skanska USA Building, the company announced last month.

In October, the builder tapped Jenny Chandler Graham as executive vice president and chief strategy officer, and tapped Tieg Murray Rustam as vice president of market strategy and creative services. Both promotions among its construction operations in the United States.
