Dive brief:
- Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health will build a $442 million neurological and neurosurgical care complex in San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, the company. announced on April 4.
- The facility will be located next to its existing California Pacific Medical Center, the Mission Bernal campus, the statement said, at the former St. Luke. The construction kicks off a five-year plan that the medical giant says will see an investment of nearly $1 billion across the city upon completion.
- Sutter selected Appleton, Wis.-based builder Boldt Co. to deliver the new five-story, 129,000-square-foot care center, the company confirmed to Construction Dive via email. It will officially accept patients in 2028.

Services at the care complex will initially include neurology and neurosurgery, as well as high-demand services such as laboratory, imaging, infusion, rehabilitation and an on-site ambulatory surgery center, according to the release. Patients will also have access to the latest research and clinical trials at the facility.
In addition, Sutter’s Ray Dolby Brain Health Center and Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Research and Treatment Center will relocate to the new complex, according to the release.
“Sutter Health is doubling down on its commitment to making significant investments that will greatly expand access to advanced specialty care to meet the care needs of San Francisco residents and the entire Bay Area,” said Warner Thomas, CEO of Sutter Health, in the statement.
Other builders have also recently launched health projects. Gilbane broke ground a $410 million hospital facility in Brevard County, Fla., on March 21, and a joint venture led by New York City-based Turner Construction started in january on a $550 million project in San Antonio, Texas.
Boldt also has a history with Sutter. The Midwest contractor, as part of a joint venture with general contractor Herrero Builders of San Francisco, erected the health network $1.3 billion hospital in San Franciscowhich was inaugurated in 2019.
